Beneath the surface
Scroll through the four things your plants feel but cannot tell you. Each one is a reading on the same little meter.
At the leaf line
Too little and stems stretch thin and pale. Too much and leaves scorch. One reading tells you if that sunny windowsill really is sunny.
Tip: check light at noon, at leaf height.
0–5 cm · Topsoil
Seeds wait for warm soil, not warm air. Knowing the soil temperature tells you when to sow, and when to wait one more week.
Tip: most vegetable seeds sprout best in 60–75°F soil.
5–15 cm · Root zone
The top can look dry while roots are still soaked, the most common way houseplants are loved to death. Read the root zone before you reach for the watering can.
Tip: push the probe in about two thirds of the pot depth.
15 cm+ · Deep soil
pH decides which nutrients roots can actually take up. Blueberries want acid, lavender wants sweet. Feed the soil your plant was made for.
Tip: most garden plants are happiest around pH 6 to 7.

Yellowing often comes from soggy roots or soil that has drifted too acidic or alkaline to feed well. Take a moisture and pH reading before you water again.
A drooping plant can be bone dry or waterlogged. One moisture reading in the root zone tells you which, so you never overwater a wilting plant by mistake.
Low light and cold soil slow everything down. Check the light where the plant sits and the soil temperature, then move it or wait for warmer days to feed.
Plants drink at different speeds every week. Water when the moisture reading drops toward dry, and let the soil tell you the timing.
